Best known for his boldly colored two-dimensional works, Jonas Wood (b. 1977) has established a signature style that combines art historical references with images of his surroundings. His technique involves collaging and layering a vast array of images including photos, found pictures, and other artists’ works. Wood’s depiction of tropical plants and gardens, flowers, pots, and sports imageries, all of which come together in his interiors and exteriors, is the most representative of his works and reflects his approach to subject matter defined by his personal experiences. These diverse references are rendered in his distinctive visual elements including minimal lines, shapes, pure colors, and spatial forms, which blur the line between figuration and abstraction. Through this stylistic technique, he continuously experiments to “push the boundaries of how colors work and how things work compositionally” and develops exceptionally large, graphic paintings that invite us to engage with a new pictorial space. Jonas Wood often collaborates with his wife Shio Kusaka, who is a ceramist, and their diverse experiences not only serve as an additional inspiration embodied in each of their individual works, but also represent a matured dialogue between the two artists.
